20th Century Fox has released the second trailer for the alien invasion thriller Independence Day: Resurgence.
The sequel to the 1996 Will Smith blockbuster Independence Day, which Smith is not attached to, returns with Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, and Bill Pullman. The film also stars Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, William Fichtner, and Joey King.
We always knew they were coming back. After “Independence Day” redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
Goldblum recently discussed the possibility of the film setting up future sequels.
“I think what they have in mind is that if this is well enjoyed, then they have some ideas. And there may even be an artful reference towards the end of the movie of what could [happen next]. It sets up the possibility that it’s not over – that the fat lady has not yet sung,” Goldblum said at Cinemacon, according to CinemaBlend.
Other cast members teased Earth might be facing more than one alien species in the future.
Independence Day: Resurgence will debut on June 24.
